Head of Secondary
We are looking for a new Head of Secondary for January or September 2018 owing to the appointment of the current post holder to the headship of another British School in Spain. (Last year, our Head of Primary was appointed to the headship of a new school in Latvia.)
The school is looking for an exceptional teacher and leader to join the senior team with overall responsibility for the school’s Secondary Section from Year 7 to Year 13. The successful candidate will be expected to shape the future direction of the section within the constraints of the school’s stated aims.
The post does not come with teaching responsibility but a small commitment may be required in accordance with the needs of the timetable.There are 281 secondary students currently on roll (overwhelmingly EAL learners) distributed amongst the 14 classes. The post will require leadership of 30 teachers.
The secondary classes are located on the main school site. We are currently putting up an extension to the main block which will provide much improved secondary accommodation and during the summer of 2018 we will be carrying out significant remodelling in the existing building.
The Secondary Section has a team of Key Stage coordinators and six heads of department.
Essential qualities for appointment:
A knowledge of Spanish is desirable. If appointed, a non Spanish speaker would be expected to learn quickly.
The post includes membership of the whole school senior team of five: The Head Teacher, Head of Administration, ‘Directora Técnica’, Head of Secondary and Head of Primary.
The post is vacant from January 2018. However, the school could wait until September, if necessary, for the desired candidate to be available.

Information for prospective candidates for teaching positions
The BSC was founded in 1998. In 2003 it moved into new, purpose built accommodation in the city of Córdoba and in September 2007 opened a new foundation unit 500 metres from the main school. It grew rapidly towards full two form entry with students from 3 to 18 years old. It has quickly established itself as one of the city’s and Spain’s most prestigious schools with students entering Oxbridge and Spain’s best universities. In February 2014 it achieved BSO (British Schools Overseas) recognition after a rigorous inspection by UK and Spanish based inspectors. (The full report is published on this website in the ‘Education’ section.) The AS/A level and SATS results have been pleasing and our IGCSE results have been outstanding in recent years. In June 2006 and June 2008, two of our students were awarded the Cambridge International Examinations “Brilliance in Spain” award for achieving the best grades out of the 70+ British schools nationally. High expectations are made of staff who work hard in a busy, purposeful
atmosphere with a focus on learning. Teachers have the full support of senior
management in insisting on the highest standards of dress and behaviour. There
is an average class size overall of 18 in the school, but most primary and
foundation classes have between 20 and 25 students. The timetable allows for
daily preparation time for all teachers. The school day is from 9.00 to 16.30
except in the hotter months of September and June when classes end at 14.30.
The city of Córdoba (350,000 inhabitants) is of great historical interest. The many centuries of historical Arab occupation have left their mark on the architecture, food and culture of the city. The school staff tend to live in the city and take full advantage of the busy street life and reasonably priced restaurants. The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking and the city is well placed for visiting the rest of AndalucÍa. (Seville and Málaga are both an hour and a half away by car.) There are a high speed rail links to Madrid, Seville and Málaga.
All teaching posts offer a gross salary of 25,874 euros p.a. divided into 12 monthly payments. As well as an annual cost of living increase, staff receive additional payments between their second and tenth year to reward length of service. Spanish income tax is deducted and the school makes full social security payments. There are no fees for staff children but there is a charge of 125 Euros a month per child for lunch and materials. The school offers one week in a hotel on arrival and help is given to find suitable accommodation as well as fulfilling all the bureaucratic requirements of a move to Spain.
conditions of service are determined by the Spanish national agreement for
private schools. Staff work from September to the end of June. There is a staff
meeting once a week after school and parents’ evenings are held two or three
times a year. There are usually between 175 and 180 teaching days a year and
teachers enjoy 2 months paid summer holiday. There are Christmas and Easter
breaks (between 1.5/2 weeks each) and a number of festivals and local holidays
throughout the year. The school provides a free lunch for staff and a weekly
Spanish lesson with entry for IGCSE Spanish. Continuous professional development
is provided and support for staff.. The school is a member of the National
Association of British Schools in Spain. Appointment to any post will only be
confirmed once relevant police checks have been completed satisfactorily.
Accommodation is approximately 500/550 euros per month for a 2 bedroom flat and up to 1000 euros a month for a substantial family home.
